Helping Students Grow Beyond Success Toward Significance

When I speak to students, I often begin by sharing something personal: I didn’t know what I wanted to do in high school. Like many teens, I felt uncertain about my future and unsure which direction to take. In fact, it wasn’t until a college counselor reviewed my aptitude tests and suggested engineering that I began to see a path forward.

That’s why I’m passionate about speaking to students today. I want them to know that it’s okay not to have all the answers — what matters is developing the courage to step outside your comfort zone and take the next step toward growth.

One of the themes I share with students is the difference between success and significance. Success is often measured by grades, titles, or achievements. Significance, on the other hand, comes when you use your strengths to make a lasting difference — in your own life and in the lives of others.

The most rewarding part of these talks is hearing what students take away. Here are just a few of their reflections:

  • “I really liked the way you emphasized significance rather than success.”
  • “It’s a good reminder that if you’re comfortable you aren’t growing.”
  • “The lesson was very memorable. I will be applying what I learned to my life for sure!!”

Comments like these remind me that students are not only listening, but also ready to take action — to stretch, grow, and discover who they can become.

My goal is simple: to inspire students to take one step toward becoming their best selves.

If you’re an educator or community leader who would like to bring this type of transformation to your students, I’d love to connect.
